Retailers reopening their stores are faced with a variety of new protocols to protect public health—from social distancing to reducing store hours to requiring staff to wear face masks.
How your state or region responds to the COVID-19—and what regulations are in place—depends on your location. But as you reopen, here are four ways to help your customers feel safe.
Implement contactless payment systems
The pandemic is propelling a shift toward a cashless society in unprecedented ways. Governments from India to Kenya to Sweden, as well as the United Nations, are promoting cashless payments to protect public health.
Customers will likely feel more secure during the checkout process with a zero-touch experience. That means using a customer-facing terminal, accepting all types of payment—specifically contactless payments, such as Google or Apple Pay—and disabling receipt and signature prompts. Signatures are no longer a requirement as long as EMV-enabled devices are used to process payments.
Offer contactless perks and programs
Loyalty rewards and digital gift cards are an effective way to offer perks without the need for a physical exchange. You can do this by implementing a customer management and loyalty software from Vend, a cloud-based, point-of-sale and retail management solution.
A digital loyalty software program allows you to offer perks to customers without having to use a physical stamp or punch card. All you need is your customer’s name, phone number, or email to track and redeem rewards.
Limit physical touchpoints between your staff and customers
Using technology to help eliminate physical contact for your staff and customers will help to minimize virus exposure and keep operations running as smoothly as possible.
For your staff who are working on inventory and restocking shelves, using an inventory scanner app can significantly limit the number of items and devices your staff needs to touch. Vend’s Scanner app turns your iOS device into a powerful mobile barcode scanner without the need to use additional hardware. If you already use Vend, you can skip manual product entry by having the Scanner app automatically populate your product details while you scan.
Also, cashiers can avoid touching merchandise by utilizing quick keys for popular items and product lookup, instead of physically grabbing an item off the store floor to find the SKU or price.
Let your customers know about safety measures
Make sure customers know that you take safety measures—and their health—seriously. Place signage about social distancing, wearing masks, and limits on the number of people in the store in visible locations. Encourage or require employees and customers to wear approved facial coverings, gloves, and personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times. Be sure to offer complimentary face masks to customers who enter the store without one, and place a bottle of hand sanitizer at the store’s entrance and exit. If you have an email list or social media channels, let your customers know all you’re doing to keep them safe.
Ultimately, your efforts will go a long way in making customers comfortable, helping to keep them healthy, and encouraging them to return to your store.
